Breast Awareness and Self Examination Breast awareness means that a woman knows their own breasts and that they are used to their appearance and texture. Women should know how their breasts look and feel and that this may change at different times of the month and as they get older. It is important to know what is normal so any changes that are different will be recognised. For example, it is not at all unusual to have one breast noticeably larger than the other, with a bigger left breast being more common.

Women should be aware how their breasts move up as they raise their arms and so on – so that they know what’s normal for them. Just ten minutes checking their breast once a month can help women to know what is normal for them. Women can use times such as showering or bathing to become familiar with their breasts and surrounding areas. Any doubts need to be checked out by a visit to a doctor. While a breast lump can be a sign of breast cancer, it can also be a sign of other non-cancerous conditions. Also not all women diagnosed with breast cancer will have a noticeable lump.
